Hymn-a-thon Fundraiser
Hymn, hymn and more hymns! That’s what we do in this annual fundraiser. We invite your pledges to hear and sing your favorite hymns. More information will be available, along with pledge sheets, in January. Proceeds benefit FUMCOG’s dynamic music program, for giving concerts, for supplies and equipment, and to further the Edwin Heilakka memorial choral scholar fund. Organist Kevin O’Malia plays and improvises.

Book Discussion
FUMCOG’s book discussion group and the One Book, One Philadelphia-2012 Selection Committee have chosen Edwidge Danticat’s Create Dangerously: The Immigrant Artist at Work for upcoming discussion. The Haitian American writer and MacArthur Genius Grant winner’s collection of essays takes its name from Albert Camus’s last published lecture in which he stated, “To create today is to create dangerously.” The book illustrates the struggle of making art in exile—and what it’s like to exist in a country constantly in conflict, where even the act of reading means taking a stand against oppression.
You can contact FAye and Dan if you have questions. For more information about public events through the Philadelphia Free Library, go to the website - http://libwww.freelibrary.org/onebook/obop12/index.cfm.

Keystone State Boychoir
One of the regions most prominent choral ensembles comes to FUMCOG in giving a concert in celebration of African-American History month (OK, it’s a few days after...). The ensemble has toured all seven continents. Stephen Fisher and Joseph Fitzmartin lead over 100 boys and teens in a premier performance highlighting the history of the Johnson House and its part in the Underground Railroad.

Friday & Saturday, March 16 to 31 - 8:00 pm in Pilling Hall
The Drama Group production of “The Importance of Being Earnest”
The Drama Group’s spring show will be “The Importance of Being Earnest” by Oscar Wilde. Performances are Friday and Saturday evenings, March 16 to 31, at 8:00, in Pilling Hall.
In this classic comedy of manners, two friends, Jack and Algernon, pro- ceed to bend the truth – and bend it more than just a bit – in order to impress Gwendolyn and Cecily, the objects of their affections. You see, both of the young women dream of loving a man named Ernest. So, of course, each of the young men pretends that his name is Ernest, causing a series of mistaken identities – both intentional and unintentional – to ensue.
Wilde’s timeless masterpiece has been hailed as the wittiest play ever written in the English language. But don’t take The Drama Group’s word for it. You really should see the show and decide for yourself.
The cast of “The Importance of Being Earnest” includes Colleen Bracken, Andrew Deitch, Kevin Fennell, Jesse Lehman, Lauren Myers, Stacy Skinner, Crystal Why and FUMCOG’s own Dante Zappala. “The Importance of Being Earnest” is being directed by Angela Anderson.
Tickets for “The Importance of Being Earnest” are $10.00 when purchased in advance or $15.00 when purchased at the door. On opening night, Friday, March 16, every ticket purchased will admit two people. A post-show discussion will be held following the performance on Friday, March 23.
