Higher Ground is ...
A Musical Event
A Worship Service
A Growing Community of People from all walks of life
4 times a year on Sunday evening
Higher Ground is our latest attempt to worship God in a new way. In the
summer of 2006, some of us - young and not so young - started dreaming about
a worship built around some of our favorite songs. We had the radical idea
that "contemporary worship" didn't need to include cheesy praise songs or
bad theology. We started with the music and lyrics of Stevie Wonder. We
put together a four piece band and whoever wanted to sing with us. We threw
up some flyers and invited folks from all over Philadelphia to join us.
Since then, we've sung songs by Prince, Nirvana, the Beatles, Jill Scott,
Aretha Franklin, the Doobie Brothers, Alvin Toussaint, and many others.
During any given service, we are likely to hear several short reflections
which aim to share the love and grace of God which we know in Jesus Christ
in a way that may be helpful to people who don't normally think of
themselves as "religious." We are likely to pray together. Some of us like
to clap and shout. Others just smile and maybe sway a bit in our seat.
We've been blessed with some amazing musicians and singers. The choir has
grown and encompasses people from all walks of life. Our
audience/congregation has grown. People come from various churches. People
come who have never before been in church. People come because they hear
loud music coming out of the church's windows. People come because they
love the music, or because they love God, or because somehow they find
inspiration and hope in gathering with other people in this way. We hope
you'll join us!
