The glorious windows made by GHS students at FUMCOG in 2009/2010 are now "home" in the KwaNgcolosi, South African school for AIDS orphans, built by Sharon Katz, with a little bit of help from her friends.
This fall The Stained Glass Project began creating windows for the Morris Jeff Community School of New Orleans, "one of the most racially and economically diverse open-access public schools in the history of New Orleans."
One of our wonderful Germantown High School students, Na Na Yaw Effah from Ghana, who made two windows for the school in South Africa suggested we choose New Orleans because of the devastation suffered during Katrina.
In 2010 we had a very successful exhibition at the Love Park visitor center. The students received commendations from President Bill Clinton, the Consul General of South Africa, Mayor Nutter, LeAnna Washington, Ed Rendell and various other Pennsylvania dignitaries. Gary Steuer, chief cultural officer of Philadelphia has also been very supportive. In 2011 we have been invited by the visitor center to exhibit once again.
This year we are honored to be recipients of a generous grant from FIRSTRUST BANK to sponsor a trip to New Orleans for the students in our program.(https://www.firstrust.com/Firstrust-Personal-Banking-Login/295/secure__true/) We will let you know when our plans are made.
We were filmed by TV10, interviewed by KYW and filmed by PBS. This is truly a story of love and collaboration and humanity and art that brings together people of many countries, backgrounds, religions, ages and experiences. We continue to celebrate what unites us in this grand endeavor under the consummate direction and devotion of Dr. Barbara Mitchell who is "grandmother", teacher, friend and leader to everyone there. Thanks FUMCOG for hosting us.
