COMMUNITY NEEDS

FUMCOG’s members celebrate each Christmas and Easter by making a special offering for community needs. The FUMCOG Community Needs Committee accepts grant proposals for local community projects that promote social justice or community empowerment, especially (but not exclusively) in Northwest Philadelphia.

Money collected during the Christmas offering will be shared by the following recipients.

The Welcome Church

The Welcome Church

is a ‘church without walls’ serving primarily the homeless population in Center City. Our contribution will support the Welcome Art Project, which promotes creative engagement and relationships between persons who have homes and those living on the street, who can also exhibit and sell their works. The program confirms that anyone has gifts to share regardless of social circumstances.

Kitchen of Love

Kitchen of Love

(KOL) is a volunteer driven, non-profit food pantry based in East Mt. Airy. KOL distributes perishable and non-perishable food twice a week to those in need, many of whom are referred by local churches, community agencies, local elected officials and child care centers. KOL also distributes personal care items throughout the year.

URDC

URDC

The Urban Resources Development Corporation was founded by FUMCOG and nearby churches to strengthen communities in Germantown, Mt. Airy and East/West Oak Lane through rehabilitation of homes for seniors and low-income people. Our contribution will support its Owner-Occupied Home Repair program to help homeowners who simply cannot afford to keep up with up-keep – so to speak.

Germantown Community Fridges

Germantown Community Fridges

Germantown Community Fridges are two busy sidewalk fridge/pantry food hubs run by the community, providing free, nutritious food 24/7. Their motto is “Take what you need; leave what you can.” The High St. fridge has been hosted by FUMCOG since January 2021. Our contribution will support a 3-month trial period of cooking ready-to-eat meals in the FUMCOG kitchen for distribution through the fridges.

Germantown Avenue Crisis Ministry

Germantown Avenue Crisis Ministry

Germantown Avenue Crisis Ministry connects at-risk Northwest Philadelphia residents to resources within themselves and the community that resolve their crises, stabilize their lives, and equip them to take the next steps toward self-sufficiency. Our contribution will fill a gap in resources for purchase or repair of small appliances, heaters, fans, and supplies generally not available at other agencies such as toilet tissue, laundry detergent, and adult diapers.

Beacon Theatre Productions

Beacon Theatre Productions

A small Northwest Philadelphia-based non-profit making theater accessible to all with “pay as you can” performance at accessible venues. They use critical moments of the past to show the way to a better, more equitable future by spotlighting stories of social justice advocates, activists, people of color and women. Our contribution will help them turn their recent reading of ‘When The Truth Comes Out’ about nine Black women Civil Rights leaders into a full dramatic production.
